For this location hunt we remain in Rome from start to end. We begin in an alley where Second Victim (as Elisabetta Rocchetti is billed as) and her friend (Irene Quagliarella) come walking towards us before they part ways. This is the Vicolo in Publicolis.
Second Victim, and therefore me as well, continue her walk into a creepy (hence super cool!) tunnel-like passage which seems to be built for easy access rape or kidnapping. This is of course something that the killer (and foremost Argento) has noted so Second Victim’s walk meets an abrupt end right here at Vicolo Costaguti.
Vicolo Costaguti, custom built for serial killers. At least there’s light at the middle of the tunnel…
Our next stop is in the heart of tourist land. Anna (Stefania Rocca) is dragging her drunk colleague John (Liam Cunningham) along trying to dodge his drunken advances. They’re walking right in front of the Pantheon in Piazza della Rotonda.
Piazza della Rotondo in touristy daylight. ”Trust me…I’m a drunk who only wants hugs. I promise..like, really…” The more touristy shot of the Pantheon. At least the sky is a bit sinister.
The next location was a real bummer to visit. I’m talking about the groovy bohemian bar where Remo (Silvio Muccino) meets the cockteasing girl handing out pamphlets. This is the Mons Angels bar on Via della Fossa 16. I had scouted it out on the Internet beforehand so I knew they would open at 5PM but much to my disappointment the place was totally closed when I got there even though it was way past 5PM. I made a second try some days later but to no avail.
Godammit! I was even prepared to break my stingy budget and buy a beer in this joint. So take the opening hours for Mons Angels with a grain of salt folks. Sure looks like a nice place for a heliophobic to relax with a tasty beverage. I guess the pretty gal is just an actor though. But then again, judging from her looking directly into the camera she might not be.
So after meeting the cockteaser in the bar Remo starts chasing her through the streets of Rome. First location I went to was Piazza Mattei where the chase starts.
Piazza Mattei. I wonder if they named it after Bruno Mattei… (No I don’t.) From the movie.
He catches up with her in an archway in Vicolo dei Falegnami before she runs off again, true to her cockteasing form.
Vicolo dei Falegnami has everything you could ever ask for. Somewhere to sleep and a roof over your head. Hey, it even has multiple AC options! Too bad for Remo there wasn’t a mattress there in the film. Well, it really wouldn’t have made a difference since cockteaser girl soon runs along. ”Is that a deck of cards in your pocket or are you just happy to see me? Ti-hi-hi.”
Remo almost gives up and stops in Via dei Tre Archi before he spots the girl again and continues the chase.
Via dei Tre Archi where remo stops for a breather (through a cigarette). ”Godamn cockteaser! Guess I’ll have to pull out my…deck of cards and play with myself.” Remo contemplating his next move. Looks like he’s about to pull something out.
The chase suddenly takes us across the river as we see Remo come running up from Via della Lungarina towards the bridge (Ponte Cestio) crossing Lungotevere degli Alberteschi before running down the stairs to the right of the bridge and running along the riverwalk.
Movie magic takes us far from the last location and lands us here at Via della Lungarina. ”Deeer he is!” Ponte Cestio… …which shows up briefly when Remo passes by. Stairs leading down to the Tiber riverwalk. Chasing skirts is hard work. The riverwalk view from the opposite side of the river. Here they come running. Another look.
Next up is a rainy Monteverde where John parks his car, gets out and makes a phone call at the top of some stairs. This is on Viale Aurelio Saffi and those makeshift stairs are leading down to Scala Ugo Bassi. I don’t know what happened with those concrete stairs you can see in the movie but this is the place.
Viale Aurelio Saffi in Monteverde. Yeah, it’s really ”flashy” location. Not as wet in the movie. The new makeshift staircase. A more solid look in the film. At least the locals are trying to beautify the location.
We follow John and his phone to the next location where he stops to read a text message and to check the map. This is on Via Garibladi 29, right in front of the Mausoleo Ossario Garibaldino.
The war memorial at Via Garibladi 29. Johnny boy getting his bearings.
John makes his way to Piazzale Garibaldi where he happens to make a breakthrough in the case when a schoolteacher tells her students about the firing of the cannon.
The monument at Piazzale Garibladi. Here’s where John gets out of the car. He comes just in time for the firing of the cannon. What it looks like with less school kids. Note the kiosk in the background. John starts to add up two and two when he overhears the teacher. Only in the movies folks, only in the movies can a teacher get this much attention from the kids. I wonder how business is going at the kiosk when there’s this cat fiercely guarding the potato chips. You’re welcome cat lovers!
Our last location is one of those short flashes we see from inside John’s car. He’s driving on Viale della Mura Aurelie and right across no. 4 we get a quick glimpse of the apostle statue which since the movie apparently has been beheaded. x-D
Viale della Mura Aurelie. Today he is the headless apostle. Maybe Il Cartaio got him after this shot?
